I’m worried I will be too cold when exercising in an outdoor pool. What should I do?
We lose 70% of our body heat through the top of our head. Wearing a simple ball cap or knit cap (ski hat) can make a big difference in our body temperature. Also, you may wish to wear additional clothing for thermal protection, including tight-fitting long sleeve shirts, or leggings. Please make sure items you wear in the pool are clean. Several participants wear jackets and shirts designed for water exercise. Please see our LINKS or ask instructor for more information.
Another tip is to be prepared to bundle up after you get out. Some participants bring bath robes to put on after class. A beach towel helps too.
Exercising at a more vigorous pace and getting the knees up will help warm the body. Our legs are our “heaters” so anytime you want to warm the body, just bring your knees toward the body (L-shaped from hips), which helps pump blood in our body, causing a warming effect. If you are new to exercise, or have physical limitations, be careful not to bring the legs up higher than 90 degrees.
Is this class safe for pregnant women?
YES! Water is THE BEST exercise medium for pregnant women. During pregnancy, there is a greater demand on our body’s circulatory and respiratory systems, joint stress, and the obvious, our abdominals. Because we weigh less in the water than we do on land (about 50% less when submerged to our waist), exercising in the water offers freedom of movement. This means you can build strength and get the cardio exercise needed, while maximizing flexibility.
Also, the water’s temperature provides a cooling effect on the body, which keeps our heart rate down. When exercising, pregnant women need to watch out for overheating, which can result in an increase in the baby’s heart rate. For more info, please talk to the instructor. Please check with your healthcare provider (midwife, doctor, etc.) if you are pregnant and new to exercise.
Please inform the instructor if you are pregnant.
Pregnant participants need to watch out for sudden changes in direction and avoid twisting at the waist.
And don’t forget to do those kegals!!
